Windsurfing and kitesurfing safaris / tours
Discover the most consistent wind and some of the best spots in the Caribbean. It is hard to believe that just 2.5 hours away from Miami there is a place where the winds, warm waters and ocean waves converge to create ideal conditions to kitesurf and windsurf. From Cartagena de Indias to the untamed desert of La Guajira, we will be exploring secret spots in our 4x4 vehicles where the wind blows consistently side and side-on shore. This is customizable multi-day expedition starting and ending in Cartagena. We will be staying in beach cabanas, small hotels and beach huts (in La Guajira). From January to April the wind usually picks up around noon and reaches 20-30+ knots by 4 p.m. everyday. The rest of the year the wind is very consistent and strong in the desert of La Guajira, where it often blows 30+ knots.
Location: Along the Caribbean coast of Colombia, north of Cartagena.
Level: intermediate to expert, some spots can be extreme.
Equipment: we do not provide equipment. You most bring your own. For windsurfers, one small board, three sails, mast, boom, harness, mast foot, extension, and a few spare parts will suffice. (For a 165 lbs person a 5.3, 4.7 and 4.0 sails are okay). For kiters, two kites one board, bars, lines and harness will be enough. Spare parts are always a good idea to bring.
Seasons: Dry season is the best (January-April). Wind blows consistently side to side-on, usually around noon and into the night 20 to 30+ knots. During the rainy season (June-December) the wind is unpredictable, but in the desert of La Guajira (located close to Aruba) the winds are very strong 25-35+ throughout the year. The most convenient spot is Cabo de la Vela, a somewhat protected bay with flat-water, ideal for kiting.
Accommodation: beach cabanas, small hotels, beach huts.
This is a customizable tour guided by windsurfer or kite surfer expert guide.
